Plus the story is just mad enough to be brilliant, a battle of egos between Dictator of the Romanic Republic and the Queen of Egypt that is really an overblown domestic tiff. Not the first adventure outside Gaul (Asterix had already been to Germany and Italy at that point, but Egypt was exotic and mysterious, both to protagonist and reader alike. Asterix and Cleopatra is probably the most iconic Asterix story (“ The Greatest Story Ever Drawn” it boasts!). It’s not to say it’s badly animated, just reliant on substance over style.Īnd it does have substance. It’s also wickedly 60s, with very washed out colours, and clear distinction between what is animated and what is background. While better than the previous adaptation, it sticks too closely to the books in style, which may limit the potential of an animated movie.

So, is Asterix and Cleopatra any good? Well… maybe through the hazy eye of nostalgia.

And while we all read Asterix as a kid for the tales of a moustachioed short Frenchmen punching Romans, but there are so many levels of puns, in every language, before you get to the satire, both of historical figures and then modern celebrities (Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor had played Cleopatra in the 1963 movie of that name, so it was very much in the zeitgeist at the time). Compared to Asterix The Gaul, Asterix and Cleopatra is a much better put together product, with a better quality of animation, a better soundtrack, and more importantly, packed to the gills with satire and surreal humour. Asterix The Gaul was produced by Dargaud, the publisher of the Asterix comics without Goscinny and Uderzo's approval, and they were so dissatisfied with the movie they managed to get a planned sequel, Asterix and the Golden Sickle blocked.Īnd you can see what a little French stubbornness will get you. So, why Asterix and Cleopatra, and not the earlier Asterix the Gaul ? Mostly because this was the first animated movie made with the approval of Goscinny and Uderzo. And so many antics: a slave strike, demanding better working conditions, an assassination attempt by Poison cake (which Obelix makes delicious work of), even a siege by Caeser himself! They’re crazy, these Egyptians! And so starts Asterix’s antics in the land of the Nile. Arriving in Alexandria, Edifis’s rival, Artifis shows up, wanting in for half the reward and none of the risk. Without the slightest hesitation, off our hero Asterix, Obelix and his dog Dogmatix, and Getafix head, with an uneventful trip (sinking pirates doesn’t even warrant a mention at this point). And where better else to turn than a small village and it’s resident Druid Getafix. If he succeeds, he would be covered in gold, if he fails, crocodile dinnertime. Of course, the task of building the palace in Alexandria falls to Edifis. Cleopatra responds that she will have a palace suitable for Caeser built in three months. Caeser argues that as the conquered, the Egyptians are long past their prime. And life is not easy for the Roman legionaries who garrison the fortified camps of Totorum, Aquarium, Laudanum and Compendium… Far away in Egypt, Cleopatra and Julius Caeser are disagreeing about who is the greater civilisation, the Egyptians or the Romans.

Well not entirely! One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders. For simplicity, we’ll stick to the English names, so Getafix rather than Panoramix. There are many Asterix movies but let’s go back to 1968’s Asterix and Cleopatra ( Astérix et Cléopâtre ).
